Online: Hear dietitian Peggy Noblett discuss proper nutrition for seniors. Read previous stories. Comment.

Three years ago, at age 92, Marjorie Townley of Chattanooga felt resigned, seeing little chance for improvement in her quality of life.

At 220 pounds and falling regularly, she was edging closer to needing nursing home care. Her discomfort led her to avoid socializing and remain holed up in her apartment at Creekside at Shallowford retirement home.

But the result of a few simple dietary changes recommended by her nutritionist has been staggering to her family and her doctor. Nutritionist and physical therapy assistant James Igani, who manages Summit Physical Therapy’s clinic based at Creekside, suggested tweaks such as eating sliced apples and bananas for breakfast instead of cereal, forgoing most desserts and cutting back on salt.

Sticking to the changes, Ms. Townley dropped 70 pounds gradually over the past few years, which has lessened the burden on her body and allowed her regular doctor to recommend she stop taking most of her 11 medications, Mr. Igani said.

Ms. Townley said she hasn’t fallen in a long time and she now socializes and goes out with family more than she has in years.

“My family are tickled to death. They tell me if it hadn’t been for James coming along I’d probably be in a wheelchair now with somebody pushing me,” she said.

Even late in life, small changes in nutrition and activity level can make a huge difference in quality of life, Mr. Igani said.

Replacing processed, cooked items with raw and unprocessed foods such as fruits and vegetables can improve nutrition and significantly reduce water weight and fat stores, he said.

“If you offer proper nutrition to your body, your weight goes to where it’s supposed to. Your body seeks balance,” he said.

At Alexian Brothers Community Services’ adult day care program, some senior diabetic patients even have lost enough weight through healthy diet changes to go off their diabetes medications, said Peggy Noblett, registered dietitian with the program.

Minimal activity also can burn excess calories and improve strength and balance, boosting one’s attitude and motivation to be social, experts say.

Chattanooga geriatrician Dr. Lorna Birch emphasized that older folks should consult with a doctor before beginning any exercise program, and start slowly. Low-intensity activities such as walking, swimming or even just moving from room to room at home can make a difference, she said.

“Adding any physical activity will help. People always think it has to be fancy but it doesn’t,” she said. Exercise can be “doing more things around the house, walking up the steps instead of taking the elevator.”

Elderly people often lack protein in their diet because they often don’t like to cook, especially if they live alone, Ms. Noblett said. Adding other sources of protein such as soybeans, eggs and peanut butter can help balance a diet, she said.

Particularly for those in their golden years, a healthy diet shouldn’t be about self-denial, but rather should focus on balance, Ms. Noblett said.

“You need to have some pleasure in life and eating is one of the big pleasures,” she said. “We try to just average things out where you can have your cakes and pies, and yet not have them every day.”

Only the groom?s family

Only the groom?s family lived nearby. It was never a surprise, though, that the bride had selected this location for her wedding festivities. The mountains were beautiful, and the ranch is where the couple met ? when they were just young children.

Since so many guests had come from somewhere other than Colorado, and guests were all staying at the same dude ranch, the groom?s parents invited us all to the rehearsal dinner.

Someone ? the moms, most likely even though they had so many other things to do ? had created CD?s with pictures of the bride and groom from birth through the behind-the-scene festivities at the dude ranch. Music was added, and each of the fathers spoke with love, about the life of his child. Each one shared special moments of his child, as pictures flashed upon the screen, and music played softly in the background. The presentation was fantastic, and everyone in attendance laughed and cried at the appropriate moments. That night, as I settled down to sleep, I realized how big a role technology had played in our evening of fun.

At the wedding, there was evidence of technology as well.

I usually smile and tell that person

I usually smile and tell that person to join my class if they want to see what I know. Then if their persistent I explain what I have learned through martial arts mental and physically in words not actions.

First

, I like to give them a brief (very brief) background of my self and the styles I know. Mainly how long I have been taking it and the fact that I love to teach and ONLY teach now that Im older. That gives them an idea of my knowledge level from the years I have studied, plus lowers any testosterone that might be building up by saying that I teach not compete. Then I will let him talk and 90% of the time they will tell you that they are also a Martial Artist but have only studied for a short time or just OUT and OUT lie to you and say there a master of poop-fu or something no one has ever herd of.

Next

, I will explain to them the two of the main aspects of martial arts.

Where To Find a Singer Island, FL Realtor?

Where To Find a Singer Island, FL Realtor? by Pam Bertrand
in Business (submitted 2010-03-04)

Okay, so you have decided to choose a property in Singer Island for your home or vacation home. But how do you choose a Singer Island, FL, realtor? With the plethora of hungry realtors available, you can be choosy and not take the one with the sign on the front lawn.

Your Realtor Should Have Intimate Knowledge of the Area

Your first criteria would be to choose a realtor that knows the area well, preferably lives nearby, and is a part of the local community. He or she should be an expert on the type of real estate that you are interested in – a single home, a condo or a commercial piece of property.

Specific laws regarding sales of property all realtors must follow, so there is a little chance that you could be ripped off. An additional endorsement that is important is being part of the Florida Association of Realtors.

To have an excellent knowledge of the inventory of properties available, the location, price and size are the most important factors that your realtor should have. All of this information is readily available in the MLS, but their first-hand knowledge will help screen the hundreds of listings down to the ones that are most suitable for you.

Do an Online Search for Singer Island

I started with a Google search of “Singer Island FL Realtors”, which led me to plenty of sites. In doing an online search, being specific about the area eliminated many sites that were not about Singer Island. You can check out their licensing and standing with Florida Real Estate Commission and the Association of Florida Realtors. Make a list of possible realtors, and then set up a meeting to discuss what you are looking for.

Develop a Partnership with Your Realtor

Don’t be shy about telling your realtor about what you want. Stick with what you can really afford and be specific about the price range. Some realtors will show properties above your price range, which always look better, and it is tempting to try to manipulate your budget or financing to be able to afford it

MPs took 16-day jaunt to South Pacific islands

0 Comments | Evening Standard; London (UK), Sep 25, 2009 | by Amar singh

A GROUP of MPs and peers have enjoyed a trip to the South Pacific at a cost of at least Pounds 68,000 to the taxpayer.

The delegation took business class flights for a 16-day visit to a series of South Sea islands, and stayed in a fivestar hotel on Fiji for seven days.

Other parts of the trip were paid for by countries where the average monthly wage is Pounds 124.

The tour, by members of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, was a “fact-finding” exercise on climate change. Six MPs and two peers were flown to Fiji via Australia. They also visited Tonga, Kiribati and Vanuatu.

The CPA’s British branch, which is funded by a grant from Westminster, paid for flights to Australia and connections to Fiji at Pounds 6,300 each.

The group were Tory MP Andrew Rosindell (Romford), Labour MPs Meg Munn (Sheffield Heeley), Jim Sheridan (Paisley and Renfrewshire North), Betty Williams (Conwy), Neil Turner (Wigan) and Colin Challen (Morley and Rothwell); Liberal Democrat peer Lord Roper of Thorney Island and Labour’s Lord Lea of Crondall.

Two members of CPA staff also flew with them. The group stayed for a total of seven nights in the Pounds 150-a-night fivestar Sofitel Fiji Resort.

The bill from the hotel is expected to be at least Pounds 5,200, taking the minimum cost of the trip to Pounds 68,200.

Each member also received a daily cash allowance for expenses. Local accommodation on trips with the CPA is normally paid for by host countries

Priced Properties

Creating High Profits in Real Estate Involves Finding Under-Priced Properties by Stefan Hyross
in Real Estate / Property Investment (submitted 2010-07-28)

Smart business people know that real estate investments have the ability to create one of the greatest returns on their investment if the property can be resold for a sum greater than the purchase and repair expenses. But finding the best investment property demands locating the necessary money in the beginning and developing a matrix of professionals to help you find the best possible deal. There are numerous well documented processes that can help you find potential properties for resale, but in the end you should exercise good, solid judgment to pick the one that seems best for you.

If you are trying to locate a bargain, look for properties that have words such as motivated seller or needs repairs to investigate for yourself. Sometimes places like the Hamilton Ontario real estate market can be a good city to find these properties since the region is still in demand however not as cutthroat as other major markets. As well keep an eye out for properties that could be owned by reluctant landlords who would be willing to accept a large but reduced amount, especially if the property is empty. Even if your initial proposal is turned down, you should always leave your contact details in the event they have a change of heart down the road.

Visit the local tax office for properties with overdue property taxes that are being seized by the government for liquidation, where it is not uncommon to buy them for much less than their actual market worth. Determine what you need to do qualify to make a bid on the homes and get all the background documentation in place before starting the procedure.

Check neighborhood newspaper for sale section and magazines such as For Sale by Owner to locate commercial and residential bargains. Keep an eye out terms like must sell, needs TLC or vacant to narrow your choices. Make a check list of questions to create a essential criteria and be prepared to take a lot of time talking on the phone to sellers.

If your real estate strategies include the purchase of several homes, place display and/or classified ads in the area newspaper announcing your interest. Flyers on message boards in area stores can also attract offers from homeowners who have not formally put their property up for sale. Make use of online resources to your advantage to broadcast your plans of purchasing property directly from the seller by placing ads on free forums such as Kijiji.

To maximize your chances of finding the proper real estate investment, network with the real estate professionals in your area because a Toronto real estate agent will know more on the local market than anyone else. Prepare a fax on your professional letterhead to local real estate brokerages, mortgage offices and auction houses, describing the kinds of property you are looking to buy. Add details on the terms you are prepared to offer and your requirements for the transaction. If a real estate agent has a suitable home for you, the owner will pay the commission for the sale. You might also take one of a number of real estate courses on real estate investing that are held not just to learn more but it is also a exceptional place to network with realtors, entrepreneurs and those in the industry.

Make sure you have the required funds at your finger tips to make improvements on the homes and still resell them for a profit. Keep your strategy realistic and have a clear plan that you can follow to a successful resale of distressed property
